Postcard from Harvest Moon & Outhouse Orchards

This past weekend I went on a little day trip out of the city to the Harvest Moon & Outhouse Orchards in North Salem, New York. My roommate Jenny and I ate and drank our way around the grounds and enjoyed the bright harvest colors and festival atmosphere.

 Getting There

Take the Metro North from Grand Central or E. 125th Street to Croton Falls, and be sure to be in one of the first four cars. An off-peak round trip ticket is $28.

Once you arrive, exit the train and go down to street level where there are taxi vans that will shuttle you to the orchards for $5 per person.

Tips

Wear shoes that you can get dirty! There are a lot of dusty roads and fields to walk through.

Bring cash! A lot of booths take cards but it’s generally easier to just hand over some bills. And you’ll definitely need it for the cab ride to and from the orchards.

I preferred the Outhouse Orchard over the Harvest Moon Orchard (it’s quieter and prettier), but they’re right across the street from each other so give both a try!

Attn Vegetarians: most of the food booths offer meat-only options, however there was a yummy looking taco/quesadilla tent and a pizza tent, too!

Do not go on a Saturday afternoon if you don’t like large groups of children. It is absolute chaos. Sure, there are cute babies and as Jenny would say, “some cute daddies too,” but I recommend going on a weekday for a little more peace and quiet (and photo ops!) The orchards are open everyday from 9am-6pm.

Corn Maze tickets are $7 each! I had never done a maze before, so I absolutely had to do it!

Must Haves

Apple Cider Doughnuts! Get a half dozen for $4.50

Hot Apple Cider for $2.50

Hardscrabble Hard Cider $8 pint… I don’t care what time of day you go to the orchards, you must try the hard cider.
